Iron Hill Museum & Science Center

History & Culture
A small natural-history and science center in a 1923 schoolhouse on Iron Hill, with fossils, rocks and minerals, preserved plants and animals, and exhibits on the area's iron mining and the Lenape people. White Clay Creek State Park
$5 per Delaware vehicle / $10 out-of-state (Mar-Nov)
Parks & Nature
Delaware's most diverse trail system — more than 37 miles of paths for hikers, bikers and runners winding through piedmont ridges, woodlands and stream valleys along White Clay Creek, a National Wild and Scenic River. The forest shelters migrating and nesting birds, including the rare cerulean warbler, and the creek is stocked for anglers.
Address: 750 Thompson Station Rd, Newark, DE 19711
Tip: The entrance fee runs March 1-November 30; out-of-state visitors pay on the honor system, so bring cash. The park is free to enter on foot or by bike year-round. Stop at the Chambers House Nature Center, and don't miss the views from the Bryan's Field and Twin Valley trails.

Newark Reservoir
Free
Parks & Nature
The city's drinking-water reservoir doubles as one of Newark's best easy walks — a 1.8-mile paved loop that climbs a hill for sweeping views over the city and surrounding countryside. Popular with walkers, runners, cyclists and birders, who spot eagles, herons and migrating waterfowl along the water.
Address: 300 Old Paper Mill Rd, Newark, DE 19711
Tip: Open sunrise to sunset; there's ample free parking and restrooms. No swimming, boating, or fishing (it's an active water supply). Connect to William M. Redd, Jr. Park on the north end for woodland trails. Sunset is the prettiest time for the hilltop views.
